Crit Feedback - 14/12

Go back to all the weirdness, and then aim to answer that question about information vs knowledge.
There’s more complexity that’s not necessarily to do with technology - make less anecdotal statements to build a strong thesis.

Need to differentiate knowledge and information with a different diagram.
Separate clearly the only dic definition and distinct from your own thoughts.

Instagram stuff
Key word - ‘satisfying’
Subculture
Homemade activity experiences through screens
Tension of sensory engagement through a screen

You can really feel them - before even seeing them as videos or with sound
It’s a strange sensation when you really focus on them
ASMR - auto sensor motor response - a physical reaction
All favs - not the right hand physics one
They don’t even need to be videos
‘Wanting to generate this tacit knowledge through the screen’ - through this instagram this is a thing that exists because you can already feel it, have an awareness of it.

Nathan Jurgenson - digital dualism

All glass metaphors/references are too broad right now
Crux of the idea with glass - flat has become neutralised - same responses as a normal touch screen would change textural data and how we interact with touch screens currently

Arduino - forget about it

There’s a counter thesis - tacit knowledge crew, in order to know you have to do.
There’s a dynamic where the satisfying instagrams, we know it and what it is without directly experiencing it.
Do we know because it reminds us of things? There’s something odd going on, very tacit satisfaction, being triggered by images, videos, things behind a glass screen.
There’s something about going really into that field and cataloguing and documenting.
Does it have to have sound with it, can it be a still image. I would say yes.
I don’t think the actual root of the satisfaction is the most interesting part.
It’s about disecting what these qualities of satisfaction are, what do they have in common. All quite liquid?

Term - Thixotropy is a time-dependent shear thinning property. Certain gels or fluids that are thick (viscous) under static conditions will flow (become thin, less viscous) over time when shaken, agitated, or otherwise stressed (time dependent viscosity).
And Non-Newtonian Fluid

Thixotropic - slap it and it stays flat, like cornstarch. But when you plunge into it it becomes something else.

Touch screen - Hovering on the point, it’s interesting as to how it connects back to the other ideas
Need to go into the field of glass, the making of glass, the lumpyness of glass, anything that’s not flat.
What it does to senses.
What you might find a show is something very weird that you’re not able to touch that has such a touchness to it - thinking about the past
*designing the surface once again

There’s the potential that you kill it if you make it a touch screen thing in the simple way of when you touch it it does something - you’ve lost the excitement and the newness to it.

Instagram - it’s doing something before you’ve even touched it which is the interesting part.
Theyre doing something before you even press play.

Kenya Hara - Haptic - Creating something that makes you feel

It would be nice to explore the line between info and knowledge, and before touching. In between the tacit before you tip over into full ‘Polanyi’ cos i think we do know things before we do them.

There’s something interesting in this strange thixotropic gloopyness sensations
It feels like you need to go into that.

The glass and the sensors will not do the same thing.

RW - The more you watch the more you’re reminded of your absence from it, bored millennials scrolling. Reinforcing what’s not possible, not capable.
The context of instagram is different to youtube for example.

One one hand glass and what sensations can arise from glass even before you touch it, theres the touch screen which is literally responsive to your touch, and then you’ve got other kind of strangenesses that you’re compelled to touch or get a feeling of ‘touchness’ through glass.
You need to do a range - map these things out, by having the objects existing.
What is this thing satisfying.

Meta Question - info/knowledge
Then you’ve gone into this weird space where you’re seeing something going on
Towards your piece start addressing tacit knowledge and its relationship back to the meta question.
Once you’ve gone through this weird phase
Could be a weird collection of images and objects, classify it, make your own

Email the guy
‘I came by last year, I;m looking again at glass and tactileness of glass
Can i meet you next week
Are you really busy
Can I come down and see how batterseas working out
Not sure what you want to make yet

You’re interested in this glass as a material and how it gets rendered into a very flat interaction, and on the other hand you’re looking at these experiences meditated through glass which are coming through the screen that are somehow incredibly satisfying
You’re trying to work out how to bring the two together
Is there a way that I can work with your department experimenting cos thats really want you want dont want to sit here and trying and make it you want to have a go yourself
Maybe he has lots of glass blobs - off cuts
The solidity of glass making with gloopyness, need to get into the process of it

You feel it before you touch it or watch it - something related to glass that does something before you touch it

It’s a really interesting topic - need to get into the weirdness, and then go back to answering your question and finding the duality
Think you could really nicely critic polanyi and sennett and all those bros and all this craft

The split is not clean - there’s a space inbetween that’s weird and interesting
